The access cycle end to end — operator code entered, access granted, the start button arms the ignition circuit, the machine runs, and it shuts down cleanly afterwards. The relay bank shown partway through is what actually sits between the keypad and the starter.

Heavy equipment tends to be secured by a key that every operator has a copy of, which tells you who can start a machine but nothing about who did. This replaces that with a keypad: an operator enters their own code, the machine enables, and the runtime is logged against them.
The unit is a printed enclosure carrying a keypad and an LCD, with relay control behind it for the ignition circuit. It was built modular on purpose — the same architecture takes GPS and telemetry, so a single machine's access control extends to tracking a fleet without redesigning the box.
